Raene's Cleansing

Kill Ran Bloodtooth and 4 Bloodtooth Guards and return to Krolg near Lake Mystral.
  •
Ran Bloodtooth slain
  •
Bloodtooth Guard slain (4)
Provided Item:
Dartol's Rod of Transformation

Description

The night elves are as old as time, but their arrogance destroys their very world. And now it destroys our lives too. But that can no longer be controlled...

I blame the elves for much, but we are still responsible for our actions. Even beyond the corruption, we are capable of great evil.

Ran Bloodtooth is one such evil. Power hungry, lusting... the corruption has only made him stronger. My hatred for the elves burns, but I do not wish ill upon their children, so we must police our own.

You can find Ran at about 55,80. From the entrance of the path up to Krolg, keep going south along another path.

There are a fair few Bloodtooth Guards on the way up to Ran, so getting your four of those should be easy. He has one Guard that pulls with him, so make sure you clear the rest of the Guards out to give yourself some room. Be careful, though, they respawn very quickly.

Ran is a pushover once you get to him. Just focus on him and either CC the Guard, or let it hit away on you until Ran is down. Do not forget to loot Ran's head! Even though the quest from Krolg doesn't mention it, you need it to return to Raene and get your reward.

Soloable as a level 27 Shaman.

All three of my leather-armor guys (27 Druid, 26 Rogue and today - 26 Hunter) had an interesting time with Ran and his guards. The first challenge is that there are 7-10 spiders and wolves around (some are Phantom Adds). If you don't kill them in advance, they will attack you when you're busy killing the bodyguards, no matter how far away they seem to be. Some of the wolves are paired, so another will attack when you attack the first. On the other hand, the wolves have once dropped a blue and twice dropped greens, all of which were better than the rewards for the quest series (what's THAT about?).

The second challenge is that the bodyguards respawn in about 90-120 seconds, sequentially, which is not a problem when you're on your way up the hill but it means you will need to stone out or fight your way out.

The third challenge is that Ran (lvl 30) is tied to the bodyguard next to him (lvl 27). I've tried pulling the guard and tried pulling Ran. They're married. My most successful technique has been to kill all the guards sequentially, get killed by Ran on the little hill/camp to his left (your right coming up the hill), rez on the hill and kill him, as he will then be alone. Worked three times.

Those of you who know about the Rod of Dartol, please keep the secret.

The rewards from finishing this quest may look good if you are a low lvl char but the rod is a really cool unique item that you will wish you kept when you are a higher lvl char.

In my opinion you are better off not finishing this quest so you can keep this really cool rod!

IMPORTANT NOTE: remember to loot his skull when you kill him!

i left his body unlooted because i had 4 guards pounding on my head, but i managed to hamstring a couple and make good my escape. only to find, when i went to hand in the next quest at Raene, i needed his skull! nowhere in the first quest did i remember seeing anything about needing to loot his skull, all you need to do is kill him. then i had to go aaaall the way back and kill him again...

After completing Krolgs quest, don't accept next quest (return to Raene). You lose here your nice transformation rod if you complete next quest.
That saves 1 place in quest log. Have fun with rod. And you may destroy http://classicdb.ch/?item=5388 without losing rod.

I agree about keeping the rod.
I finished the quest and when i&nbsp looted Ran, i didn't take the skull.
The skull is what you are required to have on the next quest Raene gives you, so if you dont' loot the skull or you destroy afterward, you can't complete the next quest and you keep the transormation rod.
This way you will only miss the 3050XP from one quest, and still get the 2450 from the slain.
Killing the guards is a great way to make up the XP and get some good drops from wolves and spiders

I went into this part of the quest as a lvl 29 hunter and had to wade through a pack of wolves and several spiders.&nbsp The first guards you come to are easy to pick off b/c they are scattered.&nbsp Once there it was a different story..guards came out of the woodwork!&nbsp Ran Bloodtooth was almost dead when 3 more guards jumped me..and you know the rest, lol.

I returned and hid down behind his tent, wondering all the while how I was gonna get out of that mess.&nbsp I summoned my pet and thought for a moment and then it hit me..when in a furblog camp, do what the furblogs do. So I used the rod to turn into a furblog and jumped out right in front of Ran Bloodtooth.&nbsp By the time the other 3 guards put me under, me and my pet had killed the big guy. I was able to retrieve his skull just before I went down.&nbsp Then I sold my soul to the nice angel and left. :)

I Finished the 1st time with my level 27 NE Hunter.
I came in through the side and killed individual guards and straggling wolves. I went in and picked each guard off on the opposite rock from where they are standing. With just Ran and his guard there, I set up a freeze trap and sent my cat in to start aggro. I shot at Ran until he came after me. The guard actually came first and I shot Ran dead. The guard stepped onto my freeze trap, so I looted ran and RAN like hell.

Did this as a Lvl 28 rogue, pulled the guards with my bow and killed them one at a time. Snuck around behind Ran Bloodtooth, used the Sap on his bodyguard then killed Ran Bloodtooth while the bodyguard just stood there in a daze. If you don't kill him before his bodyguard wakes up just keep on him till he's dead, grab your loot (auto loot really helps here) then use vanish to excape. You did bring some flash powder didn't you? :D

Although Ran is surrounded by guards, you can get him and only one add after you get up there. The bodyguards are spaced out enough on the way up to solo them one at a time. When you near the camp at the top, take out the one bodyguard up on the rocks on the right side then go to where he was standing. You can then pull Ran and his buddy from there without aggroing the rest of the camp. Grab his skull and haul butt.

I didnt read the posts below here and looked around the entire lake lol.

If you goto the silverwind refuge then swim alongside the east side of the lake you'll end up at the south side at a small area where lanterns are placed. follow then upwards and further south, Krolg is there.

Then go back to the lanterns and go up the hill (south-east) you can climb over the small hills and you can surpass the first half of the Guards.

Simply pick the outer guards off. Then attack the boss and his "personal" guard. If you have fear, cast it and kill the boss first.

I was a lvl27 Priest and made it without dying :-)

I did this part of the chain as a lvl 29 Hunter, and it was not that bad..but still toughish. The co-ordinate 54,80 is good. Basically you go up the torches path but as you go up, on your left you come to an opening across some big boulders and you can see another valley below also ascending to your right. Here there are loads of Firbolg Guards and Ghostpaws. the guards are 27/28 forget what lvl the wolves are. Anyway, Take each one out seperately, either pulling if too near another mob, or sending in the pet if alone.
Keep grinding up this new valley. Watch out there are Guards on top of the surrounding hills like injuns in the cowboy films. Take them out one at a time. You then get to the top where Ran Bloodtooth. As expected he is Black(!) and 30 and mean. He has a body guard that seems inseperable. I was lucky because the way it panned out for me was that my pet grabbed Ran's aggro while I dealt with the bodyguard.
You will probably want to HS out of there because by now, the guards you killed have now respawned and unless you need the xp, just bale out!

Enjoy!

If you do this quest and turn it in- you
will lose the cool rod that turns you into
a furlbog. I did this whole chain at level
60 JUST to get that rod to amuse my friends
then turned the quest in and now it is
gone forever.

So if you want to keep the rod which I think
is a much cooler-unique reward than you get
from the quest. Don't make the mistake I made
and turn the skull into Raene in Astranaar
just abandon it enjoy your cool disguise.

Head South east from Krolg

When leaving Krolgs lair follow the road south (Head for the Hills/Mountains) instead of North (back out towards Silverwind Retreat

He is lvl 30 sourrounded by 6-7 Bloodguards, although there are 3-4 More outside the actual area, also with wolves around too.
